As a child my father nicknamed me “Dutch” due to my fat little dutchman like appearance. As kids we move around a lot before settling Dixon in 1920. While at Eureka College I took a job as a lifeguard at River Rock, performing 77 rescues over a six year period.

After graduating, I held several jobs as a radio announcer then took a screen test in 1937, that lead to a seven year contract with Warner Brothers. In 1940 I married for the first time to Jane Wyman, and was ordered to active service in the US Army. But it was my political ambitions as a democrat that ended the marriage in 1949. In that same year I met my second wife. Nancy an I had five children, and I even found time to act as the 33rd Governor
of California for twelve years.
